Destination
According to many, Korčula is one of the most beautiful Croatian islands. It is located in the southern part of Adriatic, and people love it for its pristine nature, clear sea, hidden bays, as well as for its rich historic and cultural heritage. So it's no wonder that in 2016 the American New York Times listed Korčula among 52 best must-visit destinations.
Island of shipbuilders and stone carvers
Rich in Aleppo and black pine, cypress and olive trees and crowned with laurels, Korčula is one of the most forested islands in the Adriatic. As much as two thirds of the island are covered in forest and greenery. The natural resources of “Black Korčula”, namely forest and stone, were a prerequisite for the two key activities - shipbuilding and stonemasonry, which greatly contributed to the social advancement and development of the enlightened spirit of Korčula.
In families which lived on Korčula, often one son was a stonemason, and the other a shipbuilder. Inhabitants of Korčula extracted stones from the quarry (petral), from nearby islets, and in numerous stonemason workshops, by working meticulously and paying great attention to detail, transformed it into heritage which inspires both awe and admiration. They had learned from the best Dubrovnik masters. By patiently carving the stone they developed their craftsmanship and spirit.
At the same time, diligence, knowledge and abundant forests enabled the construction of valued boats for the inhabitants of Korčula. Korčula was a leader in shipbuilding, always challenging itself by creating something new and innovative.
How did inhabitants of Korčula build wooden boats? How many parts did a boat have? What is an argola, and what a timun? Sign up your child for our Shipbuilding Course, organised in our resort several times during the season.
The birthplace of Marco Polo
Many sources confirm that Marco Polo, one of the world’s greatest travellers, was born in Korčula. The richness of Korčula and its enlightened spirit inspired him to embark into the unknown. All you need to do to check that is to climb to the viewpoint of his birth home in Korčula Old Town, and overlook the stone roofs in the direction of Pelješac and the open sea. Polo's records, “Book of the Marvels of the World”, has inspired many adventurers and explorers, including the great Christopher Columbus.
Do you want to learn where Marco Polo travelled? Which countries did he visit? What were his adventures like? We will be happy to organise a visit to the birth home of Marco Polo in the centre of Korčula or the Marco Polo Museum.
Enlightened spirit of Korčula
The natural resources of “Black Korčula”, namely forest and stone, were a foundation for a bright future and enlightened spirit of inhabitants of Korčula. The medieval Korčula was home to many rich and reputable families, and a place where heritage was preserved and art created. Today Abbey Treasury in the city of Korčula holds one of the most valuable European art collections, while the altar of the Cathedral of St. Marc is adorned with paintings by Tintoretto.
For more than 700 years, Korčula has been proud of its tradition of brotherhoods - religious associations whose main tasks included helping brothers in distress. The oldest one, All Saints, was founded in 1301. In addition to helping others, the brotherhoods had a humanistic or enlightening character. They had their own houses, and wealthy members donated a variety of inventory and artwork.
Do you wish to visit the Cathedral of St. Marc, Abbey Treasury or learn more about Korčula brotherhoods? Let us know and we will be happy to arrange a tour with our tour guide.
